Fourteen years ago, in Melbourne, during routine visit to my son's doctor.

I encountered a concept that reshaped not only my approach to parenting but also my perspective on leadership management – Tough Love.

Little did I know that the wisdom shared by that doctor would extend far beyond my personal and professional life.

Tough Love, at its core, is about finding the delicate balance between compassion and discipline.

It involves making difficult decisions and setting boundaries for the betterment of the individual or team.

While it may seem stern on the surface, its ultimate aim is growth and development, both personally and professionally.

My Journey with Tough Love

As I reflect on my journey, I realize how instrumental Tough Love has been in shaping my leadership style.

When I transitioned into project management roles, I encountered situations where tough decisions needed to be made for the success of the project and the team.

Instead of shying away from difficult conversations or avoiding confrontation, I learned to embrace them, knowing that they were essential for progress.

Here are the 7 steps to implement Tough Love in Leadership Management:

Step 1: Establish Clear Expectations

Begin by clearly defining expectations for your team. Ensure that everyone understands their roles, responsibilities, and the standards they are expected to meet.

Step 2: Provide Support and Guidance

Offer support and guidance to your team members as they work towards their goals. Be available to answer questions, provide resources, and offer assistance when needed.

Step 3: Hold Accountable

Hold your team members accountable for their actions and performance. If expectations are not met, address the issue promptly and discuss ways to improve.

Step 4: Offer Constructive Feedback

Provide regular feedback to your team members, both positive and constructive. Celebrate successes and acknowledge efforts, but also address areas where improvement is needed.

Step 5: Lead by Example

Lead by example and demonstrate the values and behaviors you expect from your team. Show integrity, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Step 6: Be Empathetic

While Tough Love requires firmness, it is essential to approach situations with empathy and understanding. Take the time to listen to your team members' concerns and perspectives.

Step 7: Adapt and Evolve

Remain flexible and willing to adapt your approach as needed. Every situation and individual is unique, so be open to finding new ways to support and motivate your team.
